Previews Blogging: February Marvel Edition
1 February 2010
Every month, I go through Diamond's Previews to figure out what I want. From now until, I will blog about what I see that catches my attention. Keep in mind that most of my comic buying consist of #1s, collected editions (hardcovers or TPBs), or OGN (original graphic novels). I buy #1s to see if it's something that I will get later in a collected edition.

I start with Marvel because I buy a fair amount of Marvel and they are outside the main book in their own little booklet. When Marvel joins the rest of Previews, then they will cease to be first.

Page 6 : Siege #4 of 4
The last of Siege is shipping. That means that theoretically Marvel has come to the end of the Civil War, Secret Invasion, Dark Reign era and get back to telling non-Event stories. I hope the Heroic Age is more like Heroes Return and not another "event."

The end of Siege looks like it will be 15 different books including
  1. Siege #4
  2. Siege: Embedded #4
  3. Dark Avengers #16
  4. New Avengers #64
  5. Mighty Avengers #36
  6. Thunderbolts #143
  7. Avengers: The Initiative #35
  8. Thor #609
  9. New Avengers: Finale
  10. Fallen
  11. Siege Loki
  12. Siege Spiderman
  13. Siege Captain America
  14. Siege Young Avengers
  15. Siege Secret Warriors
ASIDE: Marvel  is getting a bit sloppy. There are aqt least 2 obvious errors in their solicitations. Siege Spiderman should be Spider-Man (with the hypen) and on page 67 Realm of Kings: On of Hulk should be SON of Hulk.

Page 12:  New Avengers: Finale
This is a book that I will more than likely pick up as it will give me a summary of the New Avengers and how everything ultimately played out. I expect it to be much like the Avengers: Finale that came about after Avengers Disassembled.

Page 15: Black Widow #1
Daniel Acuna's cover comes across like Adam Hughes crossed with Dave Johnson. I love how Marvel uses the "Women of Marvel" stunt as a cover to get more product related to Iron Man II out the door.

Page 17: Firestar #1
The pragmatist in me says to just ignore these Women of Marvel one shots as Marvel with ignore most of them later. However, I'm a big fan of Sena McKeever's female characters. This appears to be a character driven story, so it's playing to his strengths. I may not pre-order this, but just wait and see if i'm interested when it hits the shelf.

Page 22: Husk #1
A new Soleil series? mini-series? One-Shot? a quick search reveals that it's a 2 issue series, so I'll wait for the collection.

Pages 27-31
They reduced the Ultimate universe down to it's core titles (Spider-Man and Ultimates) only to pump out more mini series? Do we really need Ultimates and Avengers? Punisher as an Avenger? Even with Millar on the title, it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. But, I guess it makes as much sense as putting 2 notorious slow artists (Cho and Art Adams) on 2 of the main Ultimate books.

Page 35: Web of Spider-Man #7
Kraven the Hunter is one of my favorite characters. His death in Kraven's Last Hunt is the single best Kraven story ever. It ended with his death and that should have been the end of the character.  I don't need any more Kraven stories and all the new Kravens and new revelations ultimately just water down Last Hunt. Just let him rest in peace.

Page 37: The Savage Axe of Ares
I'm a sucker for the classic black and white magazines. Creepy, Eerie,. Vampirella, Savage Sword of Conan.... I love them all. I'm sure this isn't going to be magazine sized, but it is black and white and "in the spirit of the Mighty Marvel Magazines of yore."

Page 38: Avengers Vs. Atlas #4
I like Ramos's art, but these covers for this series have just looked "off." Why bother with Ramos AND a variant, do one or the other, every book doesn't need a variant cover.

Page 39: New Avengers: Luke Cage #1 (of 3)
I love Canete's art and I pretty much will buy anything that he works on. I'm looking forward to seeing this story in collected form in a  couple months.

Page 90: The Marvel Art of Joe Quesada
I've always been a fan of Quesada's art from his time at DC through Event and Marvel Knights and the little bit of art that he's done while Marvel EIC. As big a fan as I am, I'm not sure I'll be buying this book.

Page 97: Infinity Gauntlet Premiere HC
I remember when these series first hit the comic rack and I bought it and every Infinity event after it. They were fun, but not essential to any characters that were not cosmic characters and event he cosmic characters never seemed to care about Thanos and the IG. With the IG playing a role the Illuminati and the lead up to Secret Invasion, I would have expected this collection then and not now several years later.

And that's it this month for Marvel. Keep a look out later for the other major publishers.
