Maria Campbell's Halfbreed
10 January 2013
This is the first of the 12 books that I've promised to read this year. I will be writing notes on my thoughts on each one and posting them under the tag The Twelve.

Halfbreed is an autobiographical survivor's tale of a Canadian metis. One of 8 kids born into extreme poverty, Maria Campbell was gifted with a warrior's spirit and a grandmother (Cheechum) that gave her everything she needed to be a survivor. It was impossible to read this book and not see the parallels between Cheechum and my grandmother. The pride that refuses handouts and prefers the pain of a dollar earned from a hard day's work and living from your wits and not from government dependency.
